Success Stories

Why shouldn’t it be fun and easy to realize your dream of being a published author? It can be.

My Story

On 11/11/11 I released 6 books simultaneously which I wrote and independently published during the previous 6 months. I can help you, too.

Other Voices

Here are some comments from writers I’ve helped get their book out of the someday box. Imagine how you’ll feel when you do.

Pathfinding Session and Road Map

It provided more clarity for me and showed me that with a lot of work and their guidance, I could publish my book in 4-6 months. I never considered when I first reached out to them that the process could go that quickly, but their accountability and systems in place have made it possible.

I was confused and frustrated. They said that with their help I would have a book self-published in six months. Well, they took me by the hand and put up with my phone calls and emails requesting all kinds of stuff.

Throughout the years he has maintained the same professional ethics and razor sharp ability and keen passion for assisting new authors in getting their manuscript finished and published. Yet he is realistic in his advice for helping authors understand the intricate challenges in the publishing industry.

Without Joel’s help my dream would not have become a reality. His enthusiasm for the story and for Ireland was irresistible. He told me he was going to shepherd me through the process and that is what he did. I had no idea you could shepherd velociraptors.

Having access to someone who knows both sides, the writing and the business, makes a big difference.

In the back of my mind, I always wanted to write a book; Joel was able to somehow tap into this latent desire and provide me with the tools to turn it into a reality.

When I finally decided to write the book Joel showed me how simply it could be done. With his coaching I put one foot in front of the other and took the steps to getting it done. My book was finished in 6 weeks!

He brought my project to fruition, keeping me motivated and focused from start to finish. Joel was consistent, reliable, understanding, pleasant and had genuine passion for my project.

“I’ve sold 140 books in 2 weeks!”

Working with Ed to get his children’s book published was a lot of fun. We are proud to add his book to our daughter’s bookshelf and know you’ll enjoy reading it to your children and grandchildren as well.

Sidney the Uncommon Squirrel

sidney the uncommon squirrel
I wrote Sidney the Uncommon Squirrel a few years back. I spent years talking to and feeding squirrels on Boston common and the Public Garden. You might say I’m the Squirrel Whisperer and this was where I go the idea to write a story about an adventurous squirrel, named Sidney. I was rejected by traditional publishing houses around Boston. I thought they would jump at the chance of publishing a children’s book that takes place on Boston Common. My rejections became geographical and I was ready to pack it in.

I met Joel and Sue Canfield on LinkedIn through one of the many writing groups that I am a member of. I knew that the only way to get Sidney into the hearts of children everywhere was to self-publish. But how do you do that? I remember a phone call with Sue and Joel last July and they were talking about the self-publishing business. It sounded like a foreign language. I was confused and frustrated.

BUT, they both said the magic word, “PUBLISHED.” They said that with their help I would have a book self-published in six months. Well, they took me by the hand and put up with my phone calls and emails requesting all kinds of stuff. I grew up and I am more familiar with the process now. And they hired an unbelievable illustrator by the name of Davina Kinney. Davina gave life to Sidney and I was so excited throughout the whole process.

I never knew how involved it is to get published. Sue and Joel made it happen and for that I will be forever grateful. I’ve sold 140 books in 2 weeks and I love marketing Sidney. This is the first in a series of travel books featuring Sidney to familiar sights. Where would you like him to travel?

From Frenzied to Finished

I’ve known Alex for over 15 years. The first time he described the plot of Treasure of the Mayan King I was hooked. We spent an afternoon taking about all his book ideas. It was a side of him I’d never seen: his stories have the page-turning quality built in. When he sends me a new manuscript to review, I leave myself plenty of time so I don’t have to stop for anything once I’ve started reading.

Treasure of the Mayan KingI have known Joel for many years now and if there is one word to describe him it would have to be “patient.” When it came to mentoring me for my first novel, Joel was very patient with me. I have a tendency to get myself into a frenzied state of mind when it comes to my projects. You could chalk this emotional state to my creative madness, yet Joel was always there with a patient and steady manner.

Kudos to Joel D Canfield!

“Accountability and Systems . . . Made It Possible”

We don’t teach folks how to write. We don’t tell them what to write. Most of the authors we work with have no trouble with their subject matter or writing skills (though of course, a good editor helps us all.)

Like all writers, though, Katie needed someone to show her the path and keep her on it, and moving forward.

BananacondasI originally reached out to Joel and Sue Canfield in November of 2012 because my mentor and colleague had just finished publishing a book with their help, and I was curious about the process. I also had a few ideas for a book that I wanted to run by them. We exchanged emails, then had a call, and then they sent me the Road Map for exploring the process of writing my book.

“I Had Pretty Much Given Up”

Having a passion for all things Irish made me an easy mark when I met Kerry. Though she’s a British expatriate living in France, her roots go back to Ireland, as does her book.

Think your book will never be published, or even perhaps that it’s not worth publishing? That’s what others thought about Ramblings in Ireland. Walking around Ireland with her husband, going off on mental tangents about this, that, and the other thing — so what? Read Kerry’s book. I challenge you not to be amused and touched by it.

Your book is worth publishing. Kerry’s certainly was.

Ramblings in Ireland

I had pretty much given up on the idea of getting my book Ramblings in Ireland published. No publisher or agent was interested in it and there is only so much rejection a girl can take. My first contact with Joel was for some technical help with my blog. He really should have realised then just how much I actively repel technology. But he offered to help me get my book out of the Someday Box.

With Joel’s help and guidance my manuscript was transformed into a published work and an ebook. I am very pleased and proud with the result. I wrote the book I wanted to write and it is out there, being read, and people like it.

“I Wouldn’t Have Gotten That from Someone Else”

I’d known Terry for some time before I discovered that he wanted to write children’s books. As he says “My daughters loved reading in spite of me; now I want kids to love reading because of me.”

Being able to talk with you about the business aspects of being an author is so helpful. Learning to do marketing the right way, avoiding the common mistakes—I wouldn’t have gotten that from someone else. Having access to someone who knows both sides, the writing and the business, makes a big difference.

“You Have Handed Me a Golden Opportunity on a Platter”

When Frances and I started working together, she had 4,000 words written, and a very clear idea of the business she wanted to create based on the book she wanted to write. She gives me more credit than I feel warranted—this publishing stuff is fun and easy. It’s the writing that’s hard—and Frances does the work.

As excited as I was about my book I recognized that I wouldn’t finish it without help. Your offer came at the perfect time. I see publishing this book as a great way to launch Your Effortless Business as a business.

It’s hard to know when a book is done; I kept coming across things I could add. I appreciated having your experience to help me. Knowing you were there allowed me the freedom to trust it will all work out in the end.

Frances SchagenI hope you choose to continue with publishing because there are millions of people like me around the world with something great to say who need help getting it out.

You have changed my life. You have handed me a golden opportunity on a platter.

I will be proud to hold up this book in a room full of people and call it mine!

“I Always Wanted to Write a Book”

When I met Tom Berarducci, he just talked like an author. Here’s what he says about creating his book “What Not To Do In Business”

What Not To Do In Business

Tom Berarducci
What Not to Do in Business

I engaged Joel’s coaching services after leaving a 27-year career as an executive at Kodak. I was pretty disoriented and not sure what I wanted to do next. Joel immediately picked up on my years of experience with corporate America, and my strong opinions about how things could be improved. In the back of my mind, I always wanted to write a book; Joel was able to somehow tap into this latent desire and provide me with the tools to turn it into a reality.

TomBerarducciI had the data, the experience, and the skill to write a book. But that’s not enough. You need a system, and someone to guide you through it. Joel provided me with this guidance, and made the entire experience a blast in the process.

I always knew I could write a book, but without Joel’s help, I probably would never have done it.

“Joel Showed Me How Simply it Could Be Done”

Books can be serious business, or they can just be good fun. Kari Hagensmith mentioned a dream she’d had about writing a fun book about a sensitive subject.

The Girlfriend Will…

I had this idea for a book rattling around in my head for 3 or 4 years. Talked about it but didn’t know how to do anything about it. Write a book? Publish? They were questions I didn’t know how to answer.

Then I met Joel D Canfield with Someday Box.

Knowing someone else who had accomplished what I only thought about was just the start of his encouragement. When I finally decided to write the book Joel showed me how simply it could be done. With his coaching I put one foot in front of the other and took the steps to getting it done. My book was finished in 6 weeks!

I have enjoyed the acknowledgment that being an author brings. As a speaker and coach I find that being an author changes the conversation with both clients and those who book speakers. I love sharing my books with others and am having fun with interviews and book signings.

“There is No Doubt in My Mind I Will Entrust Joel with My Next Writing Project”

When I met Jessi at one of my events I had no idea that this sweet girl was going to write the scariest book I’ve worked on.

Befriending Death

I spent four years writing my first novel and I was stuck. Joel helped me make my goal of creating a great book a reality. I needed a sounding board, encouragement and reassurance along with knowledge and empowerment. He brought my project to fruition, keeping me motivated and focused from start to finish.

Joel was consistent, reliable, understanding, pleasant and had genuine passion for my project. The experience of sharing the excitement of my project made our work together exponentially better. There is no doubt in my mind I will entrust Joel with my next writing project. I am grateful to work with such a wonderful publishing partner.

“After Your Comment . . . It Just Happened”

I share free advice in online forums all the time, and it’s wonderful to hear how it helps. Carolyn was stuck; she had her story’s ending in mind, but the super beginning she was writing kept heading another direction. My advice? Follow the story, don’t force it.

Thanks for the advice Joel. After reading your comment, I went back to my story and let it flow on its own. I was able to move my character from the point of which she was stuck and miraculously achieved a telephone conversation with great dialog. I never outlined the scene or thought about it. It just happened.
