9 Sentences, 15 Chapters, and the Math of Structure

Geeking out on story structure today. As you know, I got all excited about Larry’s 9 sentences.

So of course I had to see how I could line them up: Shawn’s 15 chapters and Larry’s 9 sentences.

It’s not a tidy alignment. In response to my email asking about this both Shawn and Larry said they see these as different levels of detail, with some direct correlation and some complete disconnect.

Got me thinking, though, and gave me some numbers for my current work in progress which, by the way, is almost to the 25% point in the writing phase. Since that means the 9 sentences are done, all the plot issues sorted, and details like foreshadowing, emotional depth in the setup, etc. are all in place, it’s much closer than 25%. It just might be done by spring after all.
