After I used up the 10 I bought from Bowker, I started using the free ISBNs CreateSpace offers. I don’t care who the publisher of record is. I care who’s credited with the intellectual property (and the payments.)
Other authors have tried to convince me that owning your ISBNs is the only professional route.
Until now, that’s been the whole argument: it looks more professional. Leaving off the rest of the sentence: to other authors. I don’t sell to authors, I sell to readers. Argument over.
Except, Dave makes some points we’re working through. Interesting points that have me thinking.
Many authors dream of including audio, video, interactive maps and more in their digital books. Alas, even color photos aren’t supported by all eReaders.
Twenty years into the internet age, how come books don’t live on the web?

Reading a couple of Dave Bricker‘s excellent posts and Tom Bentley‘s newsletter I realized I don’t have much of what they used to call a “blogroll” around here. Must attend to that.
Besides Dave’s and Tom’s, the three I drop everything to read the instant there’s something posted are Larry Brooks’ storyfix, Steve Pressfield, and Rosanne Bane’s Bane of Your Resistance which is one of the best blog titles on the web.
In the meantime, tell me: what blogs are on your “must read” list, your “drop everything” list, your “catch up when I have a few minutes” list?
Dave Bricker specializes in interior design and layout for books. This doesn’t stop him from being a writer as well. A writer who brings design sense to his word choice.

Writing is Design: Boring Words & Generic Descriptions — Not Nice!
Writing to make a profit in 2013 requires either wild blind luck or choosing to write over-the-line sexual encounters. For this brief moment in history, books are a commodity: far more supply than demand.
Stick with it for 5 years, and the opportunists will have faded away or been pruned by market response.
For now, write because you have something to say. Word toward making a profit 5 years from now.
If you understand that self-publishing is a business which is connected to but not the same as the art of writing, you’re light-years ahead of many other authors.

Some functions are hygienic: just as you don’t notice when someone has taken a shower, you don’t notice if windows are clean, you don’t notice if a musical instrument is in tune, and you don’t notice if a book’s interior is properly designed.
The opposites are also true.
If you’re a music-lover, a shop-owner, or an elevator-sharer, you’ll notice all right.
And if you’re a bibliophile, a poorly designed book is painful. It, well, stinks.
I just finished reading a book which could have been marvelous. Fascinating stories from inside an industry I appreciate.

Publishing is in a state of flux. Every variation of publishing is possible today, from throwing it over the transom to an agent who handles it all, to doing every single step yourself.
In between are various levels of self-publishing, defined to some extent by the balance of responsibility and risk shared by the publisher and the author. Understanding those differences is vital to your success. When I was asked the question in the title the first part of the answer was getting our definitions straight.
